Singapore increased its gold reserves by about 20% earlier this year in a largely under-the-radar move that saw holdings expand for the first time in decades.

The purchases, which totaled about 26.3 tons, took place over May and June, according to data from the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity reports. The move came to wider prominence when it was picked up in the International Monetary Fund’s monthly update, which shows it was the first increase in figures dating back to 2000.

Investment funds are piling into the European carbon market for the year-end squeeze. This has contributed to European emissions allowances (EUAs) breaking the psychological price threshold of 70 euros per metric ton ($79/ton) and reaching 75 euros/ton on Nov. 25, 2021.

Speculators can increase volatility and create price spikes if they trade opportunistically. They can also bring stability if they have a longer investment horizon (beyond one year) and invest from a fundamentals perspective.

Stocks in Europe rebounded and U.S. equity futures rose along with Treasury yields as a semblance of calm returned to global markets while investors reconsidered their worst-case scenarios for the omicron coronavirus strain.

Investors are trying to work out if the omicron outbreak will be a relatively brief scare that markets rebound from or a bigger blow to the global economic recovery.

Much remains unanswered about the new strain: South African health scientists suggested it’s presenting with mild symptoms so far, though it appears to be more transmissible, but the World Health Organization warned it could fuel future surges of Covid-19 with severe consequences.
